The platinum/gold ratio has fallen to a 25-year low. Here is what history says about what happens next — and why this may be one of the most compelling relative-value opportunities in the precious metals complex.
For most of the 20th century, platinum was the prestige metal. It was rarer than gold, harder to mine, and more industrially versatile. Jewellers charged a premium for it. Central banks held it. Investors treated it as the apex of the precious metals hierarchy.
Then something changed.
Today, gold costs more than three times as much as platinum. The platinum/gold ratio — which measures the price of one ounce of platinum divided by the price of one ounce of gold — sits near 0.30, its lowest level in over 25 years. For context, this ratio spent most of the 1990s and 2000s above 0.90, and briefly exceeded 1.20 in 2008.
The question every precious metals investor should be asking is: is this a permanent structural shift, or is it a historic relative-value opportunity?
We believe it is the latter — and the data supports that view.
The platinum/gold ratio is calculated simply: divide the current spot price of platinum by the current spot price of gold. A ratio above 1.0 means platinum is more expensive than gold. A ratio below 1.0 means gold is more expensive than platinum.

The current reading of approximately 0.30 means gold costs roughly 3.4 times more than platinum. This is not a small deviation from the mean — it is an extreme outlier by any historical measure.
Three forces have driven platinum's relative decline over the past decade.
The diesel engine collapse. Platinum is the primary catalyst metal in diesel catalytic converters. When the Volkswagen emissions scandal broke in 2015, it triggered a global shift away from diesel vehicles toward petrol and, increasingly, electric vehicles. Petrol catalytic converters use palladium and rhodium — not platinum. The structural demand story that had underpinned platinum's premium for decades was suddenly in question.
Gold's safe-haven premium. The period from 2020 to 2026 has been characterised by extraordinary monetary expansion, geopolitical instability, and persistent inflation. These conditions are historically very good for gold, which functions as a monetary metal and store of value. Platinum, by contrast, is primarily an industrial metal — it does not benefit from the same safe-haven flows.
South African supply disruptions. Approximately 75% of the world's platinum supply comes from South Africa. Persistent energy crises, labour disputes, and infrastructure challenges have created ongoing supply uncertainty — but this has not been enough to offset the demand headwinds from the diesel transition.
The bearish case for platinum is well understood and largely priced in. The bullish case is less appreciated — and potentially more powerful.
Hydrogen fuel cells. Platinum is the critical catalyst in hydrogen fuel cells, which are increasingly being deployed in heavy transport, shipping, and industrial applications where battery technology is impractical. The International Platinum Group Metals Association estimates that hydrogen applications could add 500,000–1,000,000 ounces of annual platinum demand by 2030 — a meaningful addition to a market that currently consumes approximately 7.5 million ounces per year.
Jewellery demand recovery. Chinese platinum jewellery demand, which collapsed between 2015 and 2022, has shown signs of recovery as consumer preferences shift back toward platinum for engagement rings and fine jewellery. China accounts for approximately 30% of global platinum jewellery demand.
Mean reversion dynamics. The platinum/gold ratio has never sustained a reading below 0.30 for an extended period. Every time it has reached extreme lows — in 1982, in 2000, and again in 2020 — it has subsequently recovered toward its long-run mean. The current reading is more extreme than any of those prior episodes.
Monetary policy tailwinds. As central banks begin easing cycles in response to slowing growth, the conditions that have driven gold's outperformance — high real rates, strong dollar — are likely to moderate. This removes the headwind for platinum and may allow its industrial and supply fundamentals to reassert themselves.
The platinum/gold ratio is not a timing tool — it is a valuation tool. A ratio at historic lows tells you that platinum is cheap relative to gold. It does not tell you exactly when the reversion will begin.
This is where the three-pillar framework becomes essential.
Pillar I — Ratio Analysis confirms the opportunity: the platinum/gold ratio is at a 25-year extreme, well below its long-run mean of approximately 0.80–0.90.
Pillar II — Macroeconomic Conditions are beginning to shift in platinum's favour: the dollar is weakening, rate cuts are underway in major economies, and industrial demand is recovering as global manufacturing PMIs stabilise.
Pillar III — Technical Analysis is the final confirmation layer: watch for the platinum/gold ratio to base and begin forming higher lows on the weekly chart before committing to a full position. A break above 0.35 on a closing basis would be an early technical signal that the trend is turning.
At Walmer Family Fund, we track the platinum/gold ratio alongside the gold/silver ratio and the gold/oil ratio as part of our commodity relative-value framework. All three ratios are currently at or near historically extreme readings — which suggests that the broader commodity complex is pricing in a level of pessimism that is unlikely to be sustained.
Platinum, in particular, represents what we consider a high-conviction relative-value opportunity. The metal is cheap by every historical measure, the bearish narrative is well-known and largely priced in, and the structural demand tailwinds from hydrogen and jewellery recovery are underappreciated.
We are not in the business of predicting when the reversion will happen. We are in the business of identifying when the odds are heavily in our favour — and positioning accordingly.
The platinum/gold ratio at 0.30 is one of those moments.
